A special display honoring our veterans from World War II to the War on Terrorism will be on display during the month of November
Marlene A. Hyde, Curator Cracker Trail Museum Hosted the “Salute to Veterans” this Saturday from 10am to 2pm at Pioneer Park in Zolfo Springs, Florida. I didn’t know that Marlene A. Hyde is a veteran she served in the Air Force from 1973 to 1977 at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Veterans were saluted by the Hardee Senior High JROTC under Lt. Col. Hingle. As veterans made their way in the museum they saw a special display honoring our veterans from World War II to the War on Terrorism which will be on display during the month of November. The display consists of photos from the different war eras from WWII to the War on Terrorism. At the event was the Cub Scout Pack 704 from Lakeland, Florida. Steve Mire Cub Scout Leader held a 1958, Cub Scout manual from the museum and had his picture taken with rest of his scouts. Joe Filice USMC veteran – Vietnam era veteran and Commander of Wauchula American Legion Post 2 was on hand for this special occasion.
Veterans came and remembered with other veterans and had snakes as they spoke of time past serving their county. An appearance by “Mrs. Florida” Shawna Lambert and her husband who is Running for County Commission Dist. #1 Colon Lambert, stop by in honor of the veterans.
Part of the memorial is the White Table of Remembrance:
Thought no one is able to trace the history of the White POW/MIA table back to its very beginning, it is believed to have originated by the River Rats during the Vietnam War. Once the war was over, it is believed the traditional continued state-side as a commemorative to the fallen comrades as well as the mend still missing in action. It wasn’t long before tradition became part of each military branch. Over the years, the “table” has evolved with some slight differences when set between each branch of the military. The general principle, and most of the setting, is similar.
The tablecloth chosen for the table is always white. White symbolizes the pure intention with which the comrades honored have served.
The table is mall with a setting for just one person, reflecting the vulnerability of one prisoner against his enemy.
A black napkin denotes the sorrow of captivity.
A single rose is a vase sits on the table symbolizing the blood that has been shed. The rose also represents the families and loved ones that have been left behind and the faith they uphold that their loved one will one day return.
A slice of lemon is placed on a bread plate as a reminder of their bitter fate. And the salt on this plate symbolized the tears that have been shed by their families as they quietly wait.
A glass on the table is inverted which denotes their inability to be with us and toast with us this night.
A candle on the table represents the light in our hearts that accompanies the hope that they will one day find their way home.
A chair is placed at the table and remains empty, for they are not here with us.
