Major General James L. Dozier

Brigadier General James L. Dozier was Chief of Staff at NATO’s Southern European land forces in Verona, Italy, when he was kidnapped and dragged from his apartment on December 17, 1981 by four individuals posing as plumbers. His wife was not kidnapped but was held at gunpoint

briefly to coerce General Dozier to comply and the terrorists left her bound and chained in their apartment.

For six weeks General Dozier was held captive in a high rise apartment complex, chained to a metal bunk inside a tent.

Since the Italian government did not want to become involved with the rescue of General Dozier or even allow the U.S. to attempt a rescue, President Ronald Reagan contacted H. Ross Perot and asked him to use his private connections to do so. After Perot agreed to head up the rescue, the Italian government decided they would launch their own rescue mission.

The Red Brigades held General Dozier for 42 days, when a team of the special operation unit of the Italian police successfully carried out his rescue from an apartment in Padua without firing a shot on January 28, 1982.

Dozier was later promoted to Major General and retired from military service. As a result of his kidnapping and the strategy he used, all U.S. military personnel are required to study his case for annual anti-terrorism training.

During his military career, Major General James Dozier was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart during his tour of duty in Vietnam, as well as the Ranger Tab and Parachutist Badge.
