3rd Annual Drug Summit 2012
The Master of Ceremony for the 3rd Annual Drug Summit was Mrs. Florida Shawna Lambert of One Hope United of Hardee she really got things going for the first speaker which was Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Opening Remarks by Guest Speaker Florida’s Attorney General Pam Bondi National Association of Drug Diversion Investigator recognized Attorney Bondi
with 2011 Leadership Award for her efforts to stop prescription drug abuse. In addition, Attorney General Bondi was awarded a special recognition by the Florida Police Chiefs Monitoring Program through additional legislation via the “pill mill” bill.” Additionally, Attorney General Bondi was awarded the Florida Board of medicine Chairman’s Recognition Award for her dedication and service to the people of Florida for her efforts to fight prescription drug abuse.
She is very passionate about what she does and shared stories of little babies whose mother was on drugs while pregnant and the babies had to be covered with blankets because the drugs made then sensitive to light, sound and temperature and how they had to give them the drugs instead of milk very sad. She also is fighting very hard to get rid of these so called Pill Mills clinics from our state.
Next the Community Panel: Sheriff Arnold Lanier – Hardee County Sheriff, Chief Mark Schrader – Highlands County sheriff’s office and Sheriff Grady Judd – Polk County Sheriff this panel answered questions from guests and gave statistics for each respective county on everything from crime rates related to drugs to murder and gang activity. Hardee County had the least deaths related drug use and more in particular prescription drugs than the Polk and Highlands Counties.
Presented a County Update a short break Dr. Stephen Nelson, Medical Examiner presented a PowerPoint presentation on some statics the different drugs usage from illegal drugs to prescription drug abuse. He explains how more deaths due to drugs are now prescription drugs and in a lot of cases over the counter drugs such as cough medicines.
Keynote speaker: Paul Doering presented a PowerPoint on the different types of drugs and drug uses and some of the things he teaches to his class of pharmacist. Professor Paul Doering is Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice Emeritus at the University Of Florida College Of Pharmacy.
Professor Doering has testified twice before Committees, of the US Congress on matters related to drug abuse and misuse. He served on the Florida Governor’s “Task Force on Drug Related Deaths in Florida.” He is a frequent speaker in the public schools on issues related to drug prevention where his message is typically “Know Why You Should Say No!” He is a consultant t local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, sharing his knowledge of recreational drugs.
