Welcome & Opening Remarks - Sheila Johns of Florida Hospital Wauchula who is a American Cancer Society Hardee Unit Board and served on several other Relay For Life Committee positions in the past, one of them being the CPS3 (Cancer Prevention Study)Chair. Local business leaders were invited to the luncheon to learn more about the American Cancer Society Fight Against Cancer, and find out how you can be re engaged in this Amazing Event.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event that raises funds and brings awareness to the fight against cancer. Relay For Life happens in 360 locations in Florida, 5200 locations in the USA and in 22 different countries.
Every Relay For Life event kicks off with an opening ceremony.... then the fun begins. It las t 18 hours because cancer doesn't sleep and neither does the ACS. The day is full of activities, entertainment and special ceremonies. It honors all cancer survivors with a victory lap and allows our community a time to gather together as one and remember those we have lost to this disease and honor those who are winning the battle.
2012 Event Highlights
- Over 80 Cancer Survivors Participated in the Opening Ceremony and Victory Lap.
- More than 800 people participated
- There were 27 teams from various corporations, schools, churches, social Civic Groups and more.
- We raised $27,500 in corporate sponsorship dollars
- And most importantly, we raised $93,000 for the American Cancer Society's Fight Against Cancer.
2013 Relay For Life Event Goals
The overall Event Goal for the upcoming 2013 season is $100,000
- Our sponsorship Goal is $26,000
- We are targeted to reach 32 teams
- Have more than 1000 walkers and
- Reach over 100 survivors.
- And raise over $600 for Our American Cancer Society - Cancer Action Network Known as ACS-CAN

ACS Mission Statement says "we are a voluntary health organization" there is one staff person to every 600 volunteers. It's just an example of how we do our best to be good stewards of the donors dollars. Highlights of some of the ways we are making progress through Research, Education, Advocacy and Service.

She shared experiences of participating in Relay For Life as a survivor and Team Leader.
